American Shorthair/Silver Bengal Development
|
Silver Bengal Development Some of the more clear coated, dramatically contrasted silver Bengal Kittens are being developed with the help of the American Shorthair Cat (ASH) breed. The American Shorthair (ASH) breeders have worked for decades to perfect the silver tabby clarity and contrast. Although the standards for the two breeds are quite different, cross breeding our silver Bengals with the ASH may give the development of silver Bengals a giant leap forward. The trick will be to “borrow” the beautiful coat contrast from the years of ASH progress while keeping our Bengal body type, head, and pelt. An added bonus of using the American Shorthair seems to be the inheritance of the lovely temperament of the ASH. The ASH evolved from the large gene pool of “barn cats” here in America. In general they have very calm temperaments, strong mothering skills and good health and longevity.
I deally, the end product becomes a very lean, athletic, playful, high-energy silver Bengal kitten with a warm, affectionate and outgoing personality, and wonderful pelt, contrast and glitter. The resulting Queen would also be very healthy, live a long time and raise great kittens. Who of us wouldn’t want one or more of those?
Pleasant Pond is working to improve our silver Bengals with each breeding. Thanks to Valerie Edwards of Fenton Farms American Shorthairs, we have 3 lovely American Shorthair breeders we are using in our silver Bengal program. We also have had the good fortune of acquiring some nice breeding Bengals from other breeders who have worked on their silvers for years, and we hope to combine those with our own silver Bengals for the future. We usually have beautiful pet kittens for sale as well as lovely breeder, show kittens.
