Blue Bengal cats are not recognized as a standard color by cat associations in the United States.  Some breeders are beginning to campaign for recognition of the blues by showing them in New Breed Color show divisions.  A few breeders in various parts of the world have expressed an interest in getting the blues approved as a standard color.  Whether or not that occurs will in part depend on getting the blue Bengals introduced to the public and also having a number of breeders begin showing them.  Blues are more rare than the other colors at this time  The reasons for this are they are not a recognized color, very few people have seen them and because they are from a recessive gene.  Occasionally in a litter of brown Bengal kittens, a blue one will appear.   This can be a pleasant surprise, or not, depending on one’s point of view.  The reason this happens is that blue color is a recessive gene, so unless both parents carry the recessive, a blue kitten will never appear.

Like other colors of Bengals, blues can be either leopard or marbled pattern.  Some bloodlines of blues have a soft peach color undercoat.  Others have no peach color in their markings.  Some people like the contrast of the peach to the blue, while others prefer the pure blue on blue contrast.  Bella Blue below is an example of a girl with no peach in her coat.  We always welcome any color kittens that arrive, even when on  occasions we get a surprise.  Over the years we have had a blue kitten occasionally, but then had none for a number of years.  This spring we have been blessed with a few lovely blue kittens, and so we would like to show case them in a special section on our site so that our visitors get an opportunity to see them.

Below is a pair of blue kittens which appeared in a litter of 5 from two brown parents.  On this occasion neither parent had been bred before, so we were expecting to see an entire litter of beautiful brown leopard kittens.  See pictures below.

As with all new or different things, some people really like the blue Bengals and others prefer other colors.   Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder we are introducing “The Blues” page to our website so that you can judge for yourself.

There is quite a bit of controversy within the Bengal community as to the breeding value of the blue Bengals. Many long time Bengal breeders know that when working with a recessive color gene such as the blue gene, once it is incorporated in a breeding program, it is a difficult and lengthy process (sometimes almost impossible) to then try to eliminate the gene from showing up in future generations. As young kittens, blue Bengals will most often have a color best described as "battleship grey", especially in the tail tips and markings on the foreheads. Blue Bengals will have gold to green eyes as adults, with the gold eyes seemingly more dominant in the blue Bengals than the green eyes. Blue Bengals can also show a soft peach undercoat, and often have a special softness and elegance to them creating their own unique style. The way the blue color gene works (and "blue" is considered a dilute color form of the traditional "brown" tabby color), there can be blue spotted and marbled Bengals; blue lynxpoint spotted and marbled Bengals; blue mink spotted and marbled Bengals, blue sepia spotted and marbled Bengals, etc.
